Why do people get tattoos?

This is a question often posed by those who have no interest in and who have never considered getting a tattoo themselves. Those of us who do have tattoos rarely think of the question, as body modification of any type is a very personal choice. No two people have exactly the same reason for getting a tattoo. Even a person with multiple tattoos may have a different reasoning for each one. Still, some categories can be created in order to display to the non-tattoed why people get tattoos.

Passion

Passion is a term that covers a lot of space, but is an accurate way to depict a great number of tattoos you may see when walking down the street. Tattoos born from passion can depict names or images of loved ones, designs illustrating a hobby, or a multitude of other items that a person may feel so strongly about that it warrants a place of honor on that person’s body.

Commemoration

Another all-encompassing word, those who wish to commemorate a person or certain event may choose to do so with a tattoo. The pain of the passing of a loved one may be eased knowing that the person will never be forgotten so long as there is a daily, bodily reminder of their lives. Joyous occasions can also be chosen to be commemorated in this way. Married couple will sometimes choose to have tattoos celebrating their nuptials. The same holds true for those excited about entering the armed services, receiving a medical degree, or finishing their first marathon. Any event that is near and dear to a person may warrant the addition of a new (or first) tattoo.

Whimsy

Most tattoos are well thought out, with people spending months, if not years, designing the tattoo, determining colors, size, and location. In some cases, tattoos are simply derived from whimsy – a sudden desire to be tattooed. This can be brought on by any number of things: a friend is getting tattooed, a celebrity that one wishes to emulate was spotted with a tattoo, or, in some instances, liquor is involved.

Each individual has his or her own reason for getting tattooed. It is important to remember that not all tattoos fit into a hard and fast category. In fact, one might argue that none of them do.

So, Why did you get your tattoo?

I’m thinking of getting another tattoo done but I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to the pain. A friend of mine (lets call him Bob* for his own protection) claims his tattoo’s just tickled a bit when he got them done!

And to prove it the macho bastard is planning on getting one of these scarafication tattoos !!

For those who’ve never hear of scarification, it’s a tattoo burnt into the skin with a hot implement, or you can cut into the skin then peel away the layers until the design is complete or you bleed to death, whichever comes first.

With the cut and peel method you can pack the bleeding wound (uuhh design) with a variety of things to create different effects, those folks at wikipedia swear blind on clay or the ashes of deceased loved ones.

Wikipedia
Packing — This method is uncommon in the West, but has traditionally been used in Africa. A cut is made diagonally and an inert material such as clay or ash is packed into the wound; massive keloids are formed during healing as the wound pushes out the substance that had been inserted into the wound. Cigar ash is commonly used in the United States for more raised and purple scars; people may also use ashes of deceased loved ones.

So last Friday we were discussing tattoo’s in the pub, and after we’d all stripped down to our underpants to show off our various inkings. Bob* was horrified to find himself trailing in second place to the pub landlord for the coveted “Most Extreme Tattoo Award” with a full back Dragon coiled around a Tree.

In a desperate attempt to regain his title, Bob* pulls out his mobile phone and shows us a a couple of scarification tattoos. Declaring he wants one of them next and he’s been trying to find someone willing to do it for him. According to Bob* there’s a guy in America that specialises in these kinds of tattoos but he can’t afford the plane ticket there.

Now I’ve fiddled around with electronics in the past and I’m quite proud of my dexterity with a craft knife and soldering iron, so naturally I offered up my services as a good friend should… but Bob* having none of it, apparently I lack artistic flair! pfffft.

At this point a couple of us who know Bob* well, and have heard the scarification tattoo line before is starting to think Bob’s* just playing the crowd, and probably has no dammn intention of getting it done.

But he’s pretty convincing and seems earnest about it. After a few more beers and some heavy discussion on what materials would produce the best scars, a bunch of us made bet we could find him a scarification artist in the UK and if we can’t we’ll chip in and pay for his ticket to America.

So if any of you guys know of a scarification artist let me know.
webmaster [at] tattoo-design-gallery.com

The only stipulation Bob* requires is that the artist has some previous examples of his scarification work to show.

And I’ll post pics of Bob’s* (Pub Award Winning) tattoo here as soon as its done, unless he chickens out!

I’d also like to hear from anyone else who’s had this done, or knows someone who has. And maybe a few more pics of scarification art. Meanwhile feast your eyes on these sumptuous scabs!

I recently came across an article regarding the Taipei government initiative towards WIFI coverage for it’s citizens. The city now boasts nearly 90% coverage for WIFI and expects to hit the 100% mark very soon. It’s not free but can be accessed by monthly subscribers to one of the state owned telecom companies for relatively cheap. Imagine that?. I have read some articles regarding other cities experimenting with this novel concept and no doubt know there has been an independent movement in many American as well as other cities towards realizing this. But the key word is independent not government and not fully implemented. Wow, an old technology actually being applied for public practical use. I think this speaks of western societies slow to adopt approach. Taipei is no doubt becoming a major player as far as cities go in the world but it’s by no means competing with the New York’s or London’s of the world yet. How did they have the audacity to do something like this first? I have actually lived in all these cities including Taipei myself. It seems the progressive attitude that made the London’s and New York’s what they are is faltering. This is giving rise to the Taipei’s, Shanghai’s, Shenzhen’s and possibly Navi Mumbai’s of the new world. Something so simple and seemingly trivial as WIFI access speaks of a larger trend in the “asia rising factor” the world will soon learn in this century.

Just my 2 cents.

Many of us know or heard of human and animal cloning but what of a hybrid? Well the reality is it has actually happened on numerous occasions. One of the first accounts of this was in 2003 at Shanghai Second Medical University. They successfully made a human-animal embryo out of fused human cells with rabbits. They were destroyed after harvesting their stem cells which being the main reason for this research has caused much debate towards it’s ethical nature. The argument on the scientists part is the more human like the animal the more tests can relate to humans, which can lead to new discoveries to help human health as a whole. I personally have always loved sci-fi books and movies so this is very facinating. I am a bit afraid of the future implications of allowing such a creature to survive beyond the mere harvesting of cells and tests. I am also conflicted as to the killing or testing on any living thing. Whether or not the creature resulted under synthetic and unatural circumstances it’s still a living thing. Will there one day be Human-Hybrid rights associations to protect these living things? HMMM……are there any among us? I always thought one of my college professors to be a bit of an ass (donkey). Just my 2 pesos.

Google unveiled it’s Free Internet Broadband (Google TiSP) earlier this morning. Currently available only in the U.S and Canada, it’s going down well with initial testers.

Users who sign up online for the TiSP system will receive a full home self-installation kit, which includes a spindle of fiber-optic cable, a TiSP wireless router, installation CD and setup guide. Home installation is a simple matter of GFlushing™ the fiber-optic cable down to the nearest TiSP Access Node, then plugging the other end into the network port of your Google-provided TiSP wireless router. Within sixty minutes, the Access Node’s crack team of Plumbing Hardware Dispatchers (PHDs) should have your internet connection up and running.

Well that’s a load off my mind, as soon as it’s available here in the U.K I’ll be dumping my crappy Pipex connection.

I’ve even found the perfect machine to take full advantage of their free broadband service. Finally I don’t need to hunt around for something to read first before stepping into the little room.

Recently out of curiosity I started reading up on the various state laws in America with respect to Tattoo’s. It turns out that these laws are very state specific rather than federal. Some states are actually completely unregulated while others are extremely strict. In Nevada this is split down to a more municipal level where the city or county is the regulating body. Most states that are regulated have the law against tattooing of minors. From what I have read although there seems to be much regulation and licencing in some states, the laws for regulation are vague in many cases. Some people feel tattooing is a form of minor surgery and should be more “regulated” but what would this require? Most tattoo parlors now offer piercing and body modification service as well and the question would certainly extend this too. In any case I feel the regulation or non-regulation should be federal or at least unified to some degree but the first step to deciding is to determine whether or not tattooing is pseudo medical procedure.

I recently read the article about David Beckham’s tattoo controversy. For those who have not read, it’s basically about him being sued by a tattoo artist for using his tattoo in a promotional campaign without consent. This seems to set a strange new legal situation in the tattoo community. Some feel it’s an assumed work for hire situation while others feel the tattoo artist should be compensated if his work further if used for commercial purposes. I personally have two tattoo’s, should I be worried if I am ever paid while on camera and my tattoo’s are showing? Is it not part of my body now? Should there now be a contract between the tattoo artist and client before a tattoo is even done? If this is the case then it may apply to a hairstylist or makeup artist as well. Is this realistic? Comments welcome on this one. I am truly stuck.

It seems to have become a bad thing to openly discuss religion in public. Well actually I am not sure it was ever a safe topic in public. Now that I am older and hopefully wiser I have become less afraid of this topic. Why do so many of my peers tell me to keep it quiet with respect to my views on religion? I am ready to hear what others have to say too. Why can’t we comfortably have these discussions with each other anymore? Is there some built in protective barrier instilled in our various religions to keep us from integrating cross faith ideals? Perhaps we are so easily offended because of our own ignorance and lack of open mindedness. The next time someone tells you to keep it quiet when discussing religion for fear of offending others just simply ask why and what is it that offends? Just my 2 cents.

mention of the swastika as the most enduring negative symbol in the group and its popularity

as a tattoo. I truly want to laugh not at the main point of the article but at their description

of the swastika. The swastika is an ancient Dharmic symbol far more relevant to Buddhism and

Hinduism that it is to skinheads or Nazis. I just think the western world has still got a

lot to learn about the origins of many of its symbols. The Nazis used this symbol to attach

some historical relevance to their campaign. There is of course no logic in their choice to

use this symbol with respect to their ideology. We all should start to learn of the positive

side of this symbol and it’s role in 2 of the great religions/philosophies of the world

rather than remembering it’s misuse by Nazis. As for the Nazis/skinheads themselves, well

perhaps they should pick up a copy of the Vedas..lol. Just my 2 cents.

He is the leader of the highly controversial church “Growing in Grace” based in Miami Florida. His followers call him “daddy”. His church boasts a cable TV spot, 335 education centers, 200 pastors, 287 radio programs and earns millions of dollars through the wages of his followers much of which he pockets. Recently he gathered many his followers to a Miami based tattoo parlor to get matching 666 tattoos, while attracting lots of press for the occasion.
Hmmmmm….all his theology aside, sounds like a business to me. He is only using the model business formula many other churches use for profit: attack others, claim truth, seek money and profess some kind of hope in it all. It’s tried, tested and works! The 666 stunt is obviously going to get him more problems but also more curios followers too. Excellent marketing idea, similar to the branding of cows. Jose at least can profesize more money in the future, at least until another “antichrist” shows up promising something different with a better business and marketing plan. People do get bored. Just my 2 cents.
