Where is our WIFI?!!!!!
April 20, 2007 |
I recently came across an article regarding the Taipei government initiative towards WIFI coverage for it’s citizens. The city now boasts nearly 90% coverage for WIFI and expects to hit the 100% mark very soon. It’s not free but can be accessed by monthly subscribers to one of the state owned telecom companies for relatively cheap. Imagine that?. I have read some articles regarding other cities experimenting with this novel concept and no doubt know there has been an independent movement in many American as well as other cities towards realizing this. But the key word is independent not government and not fully implemented. Wow, an old technology actually being applied for public practical use. I think this speaks of western societies slow to adopt approach. Taipei is no doubt becoming a major player as far as cities go in the world but it’s by no means competing with the New York’s or London’s of the world yet. How did they have the audacity to do something like this first? I have actually lived in all these cities including Taipei myself. It seems the progressive attitude that made the London’s and New York’s what they are is faltering. This is giving rise to the Taipei’s, Shanghai’s, Shenzhen’s and possibly Navi Mumbai’s of the new world. Something so simple and seemingly trivial as WIFI access speaks of a larger trend in the “asia rising factor” the world will soon learn in this century.
Just my 2 cents.
