I’m thinking of getting another tattoo done but I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to the pain. A friend of mine (lets call him Bob* for his own protection) claims his tattoo’s just tickled a bit when he got them done!

And to prove it the macho bastard is planning on getting one of these scarafication tattoos !!

Skin Cutting/Burning Tattoos [scarification]

For those who’ve never hear of scarification, it’s a tattoo burnt into the skin with a hot implement, or you can cut into the skin then peel away the layers until the design is complete or you bleed to death, whichever comes first.

With the cut and peel method you can pack the bleeding wound (uuhh design) with a variety of things to create different effects, those folks at wikipedia swear blind on clay or the ashes of deceased loved ones.

Wikipedia
Packing — This method is uncommon in the West, but has traditionally been used in Africa. A cut is made diagonally and an inert material such as clay or ash is packed into the wound; massive keloids are formed during healing as the wound pushes out the substance that had been inserted into the wound. Cigar ash is commonly used in the United States for more raised and purple scars; people may also use ashes of deceased loved ones.

So last Friday we were discussing tattoo’s in the pub, and after we’d all stripped down to our underpants to show off our various inkings. Bob* was horrified to find himself trailing in second place to the pub landlord for the coveted “Most Extreme Tattoo Award” with a full back Dragon coiled around a Tree.

In a desperate attempt to regain his title, Bob* pulls out his mobile phone and shows us a a couple of scarification tattoos. Declaring he wants one of them next and he’s been trying to find someone willing to do it for him. According to Bob* there’s a guy in America that specialises in these kinds of tattoos but he can’t afford the plane ticket there.

Now I’ve fiddled around with electronics in the past and I’m quite proud of my dexterity with a craft knife and soldering iron, so naturally I offered up my services as a good friend should… but Bob* having none of it, apparently I lack artistic flair! pfffft.

At this point a couple of us who know Bob* well, and have heard the scarification tattoo line before is starting to think Bob’s* just playing the crowd, and probably has no dammn intention of getting it done.

But he’s pretty convincing and seems earnest about it. After a few more beers and some heavy discussion on what materials would produce the best scars, a bunch of us made bet we could find him a scarification artist in the UK and if we can’t we’ll chip in and pay for his ticket to America.

So if any of you guys know of a scarification artist let me know.
webmaster [at] tattoo-design-gallery.com

The only stipulation Bob* requires is that the artist has some previous examples of his scarification work to show.

And I’ll post pics of Bob’s* (Pub Award Winning) tattoo here as soon as its done, unless he chickens out!

I’d also like to hear from anyone else who’s had this done, or knows someone who has. And maybe a few more pics of scarification art. Meanwhile feast your eyes on these sumptuous scabs!

I’m curious about scarification. I’m looking for someone in the Portland,OR or any where in the Washington State area. If anyone knows of someone who could perform this, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Bekki

  7. Anonymous on September 18, 2007 1:15 am

I think they’re sort of pretty! Not really the cartoon-y ones but some of the traditional kind are just breathtaking.

  8. unknown on October 7, 2007 9:25 am

this is just plain silly.i used to self harm my self and cut my self to release my pain; i used to hide it cause i was ashamed but this is disturbing. turning self harm into “art” or “fashion” is totaly wrong and sends the wrong message to people it barely even looks good im sorry

  9. mostwanted22 on October 8, 2007 5:11 am

It looks cool ass hell. I thought I was a pain freak.

  10. richo on October 25, 2007 9:22 pm

  11. rob on October 30, 2007 7:55 pm

i dunno, i like some of those designs and am quite intrigued about maybe gettin one!? ive got 7 tatts so far and am plannin more and would like the idea of having a scar tatt to fit in somewhere. the biohazard type one looks pretty gross though and it kinda puts me off a bit. ive never seen any in person yet though.

  12. lexie on November 12, 2007 1:30 am

i think little ones are really pretty
big ones are a bit excessive but they are just like subtle tattoos
anyone know of places round UK doing them? cant find lists on internet

  13. Phaoenix on November 16, 2007 7:39 am

This is actually a tradition that dates back far before “tattoos” were “cool” in mainstream society. You saw ink before you saw tradition; ergo, you call it sick.

Most likely, those of the ancient practice would call yours mockeries.

It’s all about what culture you’re in.

  14. Raven on November 21, 2007 9:37 pm

some of these look a little too painful… even for me… but i’m due to be cut to pieces soon…. just need a friggin design lol!

  15. polly on December 1, 2007 2:37 pm

its just another form of self expression not sick at all, it is your own body not getting something foriegn(ie tattoo ink)put in you body. self cutting is generally destructive but this cannot be compared to it at all, tattos hurt and i’m guessing this does to whats the difference. sadly know of nowhere in the UK but would love to.

  18. anon on December 11, 2007 12:17 am

“have you ever heard of sadiomasicits.”

Have you ever heard of illiterate?
Also that isn’t a question without one of these “?” now is it. Dipshit.

This is just another form of self expression, more akin to turning the body into art than tattooing in which you are the canvas for art. It can also achieve effects that a tattoo can’t like the raised, textured keloids in the photos above
    www.bmezine.com
and it’s blog has a lot of information and stories from people that have had it done and I seem to recall seeing some listing for artists in Cardiff (though i may be mistaken) if that isn’t too far.
I personally did my own scarification and strike branding about a year ago but due to my inexperience (with placemement and healing) I ended up with one of the lines not keloiding properly on my cutting which will need touching up at some point. The branding is not nearly as precise as some of the professional work you see above so i recommend seeking an established artist.
Don’t get me wrong I love tattoos (i am getting a UV sleeve later in the year) but I wouldn’t change my scars for anything; they are literally part of me and they mean much more to me than a tattoo ever could.

  19. Anonymous on December 23, 2007 12:12 am

the guy that was goin on about how he used to self harm (october 7) - shut the fuck up you pussie, and stop advertising your self pity. these people are no sicker than abortionists, paedohiles etc, and you should all learn to fucking spell too.

  20. Emily on January 13, 2008 7:46 pm

I dont understand all you who think this is wrong? Is it not like piercings or tattoo’s where you are initially ‘damaging/scaring’ your body??? I’m into my tattoos and have just had my 11th one finished, in my opinion this is the same principle as a tattoo, just different method and outcome.
Perhaps not for the faint hearted, but some of the effects are great.

  21. lee morgan on January 15, 2008 6:24 pm

oh my god you lot are sickos i think tattoo’s are one thing but u bunch of freaks

  22. anonomous on January 17, 2008 2:35 pm

Theres a tatooist near me that specialises in this, i think it looks great, just not worth the pain

  23. Anonymous on January 19, 2008 5:07 am

WHAT THE FUCK WERE THESE PEOPLE THINKING??????????

  24. Samson on January 22, 2008 6:24 pm

Scarification is a much more ancient art form than tattoing so why knock it. The ancient Chinese were tattoing peoples eyeballs centuries ago and also it was popular in Victorian England so why should scarification be viewed as any different to other art forms that are used to adorn the human body. No one is forced to have this done (hopefully)so it is a persons free choice to have this done. Long live diversity and peoples ability to choose.
PS some people out there need to get a dictionary or find the key that activates the spell check.

  25. levi on February 3, 2008 9:05 pm

they look pretty fuckin painful. so no doubt they hurt like a bitch but i don’t think they’re sick. some people are proud of their scars and others are ashamed. if your proud of your scars and the pain u went through to get them, i dont see why they’re anything wrong with them

  26. Kary on February 6, 2008 4:16 am

wtf it’s just like a tattoo but it hurts more. Yes it does hurt but it does have lasting results and for some people pain is a plesure. Not that i have tattoos or the sacrification but I’ve been through lots of piercings. It’s also not going to hurt forever and it’s not going to kill you if you get it done right.

  27. kerry on February 8, 2008 9:03 pm

I think scarification looks fab, I watched a tv programme about them and they look EXTREMELY painful! however they look gr8 and i want one myself, slap alot of emla on and hopefully pain wont be too bad! Iv always wanted a tattoo on my neck but think this would be a much better but painfuller option. im looking on the internet at the moment to see where i can get one done.

  28. fingers on February 16, 2008 3:51 am

fuck all of you who think this is gross, it looks awesome, i have a few and i love the pain

  30. joe on March 1, 2008 1:07 am

i love them, im getting a skull on my leg….scarring and sacrillige has been around for a long time its normal in the tattoo world for those of you who arent well educated….its not sick its just a different way to express yourself, but then again there are more close minded people.

  31. plmodel on March 5, 2008 5:01 pm

there are PLENTY of places that do them in the uk and elsewhere.
they can also be done with the tattoo machine, i have a ‘13′ on my leg and to be hoest it’d turned out great (im a tattooist, and it was an experiment)
i just left mine to heal, to look like a normal scar :)
it’d dead pretty, but i dare say you could even go to the local hospital and get it done :) (though it might not be covered by the nhs lol)

oh, and scarifications take a lot of commitment, bigots. just because something isn’t to your taste, it doesnt mean its discusting.

annnd they hurt quite a bit, like…a lot lol.

  32. b.b on March 7, 2008 1:00 pm

  35. Ramona on April 8, 2008 8:12 pm

ok. i think this all cool and it has nothin to do with “oh everyone doing it.” i love it because of the history that goes with it and i think people should at the very least respect that. if you like it then do it. it’s all for you not for everyone else. i think i could find someone for you friend. just write back to my e-mail. darkdemongirl101@yahoo.com

I have a friend who does scarification. She’s done quite a lot of them on different people… 3 were on me. I’m getting one of them added to tomorrow in fact…

And yeah, it REALLY fucking hurts… Much more painful than tattoos.

  41. Annonymous on May 5, 2008 1:36 am

I have tattoos like a lot of people out there, I would personally never do this…but I don’t think that it is a sin if people do it either. Its not your body so don’t preach about how wrong it is. :) Plus, if it’s legal then who cares?!

  42. joe on May 9, 2008 6:34 am

This is absolutely idiotic & stupid. Why would you ever want objects put in to your skin??? why don’t you just leave your skin the way it is, & not look weird, & get stared at?

  43. Ashkey on June 7, 2008 10:46 pm

I have 3 tattoos and they hurt. So I couldn’t even imagine getting this shit done. I think it is absolutely disgusting and ugly but hey, people have different views on everything.

  44. Birdgirl on June 23, 2008 5:41 pm

Scarification is a bit awkward for me, as I used to self harm and it does remind me of some of the scars I have from that. I find most of it shocking because of this, but I can appreciate the beauty of some designs. My old flatmate’s girlfriend had a star on her chest that looked really good. I’m not in any way suggesting that scarification and self harm are the same, but some people who have scarification and tattoos done do enjoy pain, I know I’ve enjoyed getting tattoos done because of this.

Anyway, I know Thou Art tattooists in Sheffield does scarification, as they have graphic pictures of it being done displayed there! So if anyone lives in the UK and wants to get it done, that’s an option. I’ve had all my tattoos and piercings done there, they’re really good, safe and friendly and clean :)

I’m sure there must be other places too though, if you don’t live nearby. Anyway, you don’t need to go to America!

I am a pro tattoo artist and i enjoy all forms of art!Any stupid and uneducated morons can down an art.But they need to see it is as old as life itself. Remember not more than 1685 we burned people at the steak!

  46. derfman/Fla USA on June 29, 2008 2:57 pm

Scarring is another way of expressing ones individuality and personal way of life through body and soul, or mind over body… as one would with tattooing

”i used to self harm my self and cut my self to release my pain; i used to hide it cause i was ashamed but this is disturbing. turning self harm into “art” or “fashion” is totaly wrong and sends the wrong message to people it barely even looks good im sorry” - it isnt self harm, its another way to decorate your body, fair enough i dont think it looks good after it has healed properly, but thats not the point. Self harm is when you’re deliberatley doing it yourself, not when somebody else is doing it to you. And it also isnt being done to ‘release pain’.

  54. Anonymous on July 21, 2008 10:28 pm

I do not reccomend these. I’ve never gotten one, but I did get badly burned on my arm a couple years back and I have a nice large keloid (the scars that are supposed to form from scarification) on my arm, and let me tell you, it is not pleasant. First of all when you first get it, not only is it incredibly painful, it takes literally MONTHS to heal. It is very easy for it to get infected during this time if you do not take meticulous care of it. It is also quite horrific to look at during the healing process.
Now some people are not bothered by that. However, even after the keloid is completely healed it is not over. Even after years of having it, like mine, it will randomly start to itch very badly, and if you try to scratch it like a bug bite it will hurt. Keloids do not tan well and tend to burn then peel, sometimes taking chunks of skin with the peel. They also will periodically swell up then go down, along with possibly changing colors.
Basically, I highly reccomend not getting one of these, and if you do, MAKE SURE you go to a professional and do not try to do it yourself.

iv got 3 scars done, they are more pianful in different areas but reali arnt that bad, i hav a star on my ankle a tribal on my thigh and a batman on my back, it looks worse then it is i think

    this is so RAD.

thinking of getting the skin around my ink modified with this style of art. i love it!

  58. Sophi on August 18, 2008 11:22 pm

Ok, getting pissed off at the idiots going ‘thts fuckin disgusting get a life.’ Scarification is like any other body-modification. Hate to break it 2 u guys, but tattoos r scars with ink added. It’s still a needle. Rite, that’s the rant done, now for the plea lol. I have a large amount of self-harm scars on my arm. They are old and hey- I’m not proud of them. However, I have heard of certain artists offering scar-modification techniques, changing these kinds of scars into art, pictures etc. This kind of thing can change how ppl c u, it’s seriously helpful as ppl can b REALLY judgemental no matter how long ago the self-harming happened. So, has anyone heard of an artist in the UK offering this? Please reply soonest ppl, much love, Sophi xxx

  59. nate_v8 on August 22, 2008 1:43 pm

Hmmmmm……. Some I like and others not so much. I have a couple of tattoos and I have nothing against ‘body midification’, but personaly I think I will stick to the ink and needle. If you have intentions of doing this just be safe and healthy, find some one with experience. For those of you pointing fingers calling some sick and mentally handicaped, I suggest you go elseware this isn’t the place for you.
