Eventhough most of us wouldn’t like to admit it, tattoos are subject to fashion. Not too long ago everyone was sporting tribal tattoos (myself included) and before that it was Celtic armbands. Recently sailor tattoos have been made popular. These designs appear to be fairly simple. Bold outlines with large areas of flat colour that make them incredibly striking.
This style came about in the 1940’s (when there were still authentic, proper sailors) and I think it’s back again because the sailor is the ideal representation of freedom, adventure, bravery and debauchery. Images associated with sailors include: anchors, ladies faces, pin-ups, panthers, hearts, roses, daggers, sculls and swallows. The style has become so popular that one can find the designs on Converse All Stars, bags, clothing and other accessories. It’s sort of become a whole lifestyle without the actual sailing.
I’m interested to see what style becomes fashionable next. Apparently Japanese tattoos are taking over. Personally I like to think of tattoos as an art form and like all art, it should imitate life (although it’s the other way round most of the time). A style that says something about our generation and contemporary way of life. I’m thinking themes along the lines of technology, artificial intelligence, extraterrestrials and mutation. Let the imagination run wild!
